NIOSH officials are calling on local fire departments around the country to adopt comprehensive safety and health plans, including adoption of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1500 Standard detailing how to manage such programs, and also require the incident commander on the scene to conduct a hazard risk assessment before operations begin.
