NIOSH issued a fact sheet: "What's Special about CBRN Self-contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)?" In December 2001, the agency implemented a voluntary approval program for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear self-contained breathing apparatus respirators. NIOSH issues certificates of approval to SCBA in accordance with the requirements of Title 42 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 84.
