NIOSH Takes Comment On Draft 1-BP Review

NIOSH took comment during a March 30 public meeting in Cincinnati, OH, on a draft document supporting its proposed recommended exposure limit (REL) for the solvent 1-Bromopropane (1-BP), a substance that has drawn attention as a potential alternative for ozone-depleting substances and for its health risks to workers including cancer.

In a presentation to the meeting posted to a federal website April 8, NIOSH says the draft document “Criteria For A Recommended Standard: Exposure To 1-Bromopropane” summarizes exposure and toxicity data on 1-BP, and provides the rationale and justification for its proposed REL.

The NIOSH document proposes a REL of 0.3 parts per million, a level denoting risk of lung cancer and other health effects, and which occupational exposures should not exceed.

NIOSH will continue to accept written comments on the draft criteria document through April 29.
